Model stitched "over two" on 25-count navy Lugana fabric using #12 pearl cotton in ecru.

This chessboard is my blackwork tribute to the Japanese needleart of sashiko, meaning “little stabs” which originated over 1500 years ago among northern Japanese peasants as a decorative technique and a method for patching holes in clothing. Traditionally worked with indigo blue fabric and white thread, sashiko requires a sharp, large-eyed needle and thimble to make long lines of running stitches that travel in multiple directions and cross over each other to create patterns which are both strong and beautiful.

Over the centuries, different design motifs emerged to reflect their regional origins as well as the economics, politics, and art of each period of Japanese history. Now used primarily for decorative purposes, sashiko fabric and thread are used to make table runners, bags, hair accessories, scarves, tapestries, cloth room dividers, pillows and bedding--even chessboards!
